This week in maths we compared the lengths of different objects around the room using informal units. We had lots of fun investigating the length of various objects and comparing the results with our classmates. We used Pic Collage on the iPads to present our findings……..
This week in 2KR we have been learning about the ‘5 Senses’ and on Tuesday we investigated the sense of ‘taste’ by doing some taste testing. The children had lots of fun discovering which tastes they liked or disliked and what part of their tongue was the most sensitive to each taste. As you can see by the photos everyone has quite different taste! The children were also amazed to learn that we have up to 10,000 taste buds in our mouths and that when you taste food, the saliva in our mouths triggers a message to our brains. Our brains are then able to tell us what flavour we are tasting. We also learnt that as well as the traditional tastes of salty, bitter, sweet and sour, scientists have discovered a new taste called ‘umami’. We were quite surprised to see how many children enjoyed this taste, which includes foods such as tomatoes, mushrooms and Chinese cabbage. Most children asked for a second helping of these! Who would have guessed?
During the past few weeks, 2KR has been involved in the Oatlands Start Up Program. This program has provided us with the opportunity to set up a positive classroom culture and think about what we are aiming to achieve in Grade Two. We have used this program to teach our kids how to interact and empathize with one another. It has helped us all get to know each other and to feel good about ourselves and our relationships. In 2KR we work hard to create a learning environment where everyone feels safe and a part of the 2KR family. You can help us achieve this by reading through our Start Up Brochure with your child and revisiting it throughout the year. If you didn’t receive a copy of our brochure we have inserted one below.
